Should Colour Drenching be your Next Interior Design Project in 2024?
There are always new and interesting interior design trends and and one gaining traction lately is colour drenching. As an interior designer, I’ve recently used this myself on a project and wanted to share my thoughts on this trend and why it could be your next interior design project in 2024.
What is Colour Drenching?
Colour drenching is a daring painting technique where walls, ceilings, trim and even radiators are painted in a single colour, creating a seamless and immersive experience. This can be with neutral muted colours as well as bold and vibrant colours. Unlike the traditional approach to painting, colour drenching saturates in a wash of your chosen colour transforming the space and in turn creating a real statement.

What are the advantages of colour drenching?
Dramatic Impact: Colour drenching injects a dose of drama and personality into any room, instantly elevating its visual appeal. Even with more neutral tones and hues you can really make a statement.
Coziness and Intimacy: By enveloping the space in a single colour, colour drenching creates a sense of intimacy and coziness, making the room feel enveloping and comforting.
Space Enhancement: Contrary to popular belief, colour drenching can actually make a room feel larger by blurring the boundaries between walls and creating a sense of continuity. This is even true when you have lower ceilings and great to blend large radiators into the room.
Versatility: While bold and vibrant hues are often chosen for colour drenching, this technique can also be applied with more neutral shades, offering versatility to suit various design styles and preferences.
What should you consider when colour drenching?
Commitment: Colour drenching is a bold design choice that requires commitment. Once the walls are painted, reverting to a neutral palette may require additional effort and expense. Trim can also be more time consuming to change, especially if you have gone for a bolder colour.
Lighting Considerations: Lighting plays a crucial role in colour drenching. Rooms with ample natural light showcase the depth and richness of the chosen hue, while poorly lit spaces may appear darker and more confined. You can overcome this by careful selection of multiple sources of lighting in the room.
Colour Selection: Choosing the right colour for drenching is paramount. While bold shades can make a striking statement, they may overwhelm if you’re not careful. Make sure you make good consideration of lighting and proportions. If in doubt, opt for something slightly softer than a bold and dark colour. Rich neutral tones and softer hues will still creat that dramatic effect!
Is Colour Drenching Right for Your Home?
Deciding whether colour drenching is suitable for your home ultimately boils down to personal preference and design goals. If you want to make a statement, and even create some drama, depth, and vibrancy in your space, colour drenching can be a game-changer.
